Methamphetamine is a highly addictive synthetic stimulant drug that affects the central nervous system. It can be made from common household products including over-the-counter cold remedies – producing a white, odorless, bitter-tasting crystalline powder better known as crystal meth, and it is twice as potent. Meth can be taken orally, smoked, snorted, or dissolved in water or alcohol and injected.
Meth produces an immediate, intense euphoria that can last from six to eight hours, and sometimes even up to twenty-four hours.
Tolerance for methamphetamine happens within minutes. The euphoric effects disappear before the drug concentration in the blood falls – leading meth users try to preserve the high by binging on the drug in a “binge and crash” pattern.
Meth use can cause irritability, nervousness, paranoia, fear, and violent behavior, suicidal ideations, extreme tooth decay "or meth mouth", memory impairment, psychosis and hallucinations of having bugs crawling beneath the skin, a disorder known as formication.
